No tire market segment is more varied than the commercial truck category. Commercial trucks include everything from pickups and vans to tractor trailers, which requires a selection of tires in a wide range of sizes and load capacities. However, there are also tires for many specialized applications. In addition to familiar classifications like all season, winter/snow, and off road, there are commercial tires designed especially for long haul trucks, for city driving, and even for specific positions on the truck. But whatever tires you’re looking for you’ll find them right here on our digital shelves.
Commercial trucks come in many sizes and they’re expressly built to perform a variety of specific jobs. The design and selection of commercial tires has commensurately evolved to enable these trucks to excel at their particular tasks. There are tires devised to help semi-trucks squeeze more miles from every drop of fuel while transporting goods over the interstate, tires for dump trucks and construction vehicles that can withstand the abuse of continued use over rocks, gravel, and rough terrain, tires designed specifically for steering axles and drive axles, and many more unique configurations.
Not only do commercial tires have the construction, rubber compound and tread design that is best for the way the truck is used, they’re also built with the strength to match the truck’s load capacity. Commercial trucks are classified by GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and weight limits are divided into 9 classes. Class 1 through 3 are considered light trucks and include the ¾-ton and 1-ton pickups and vans that are the preferred vehicles of tradesmen everywhere. Medium duty class 4 through 6 trucks include delivery box trucks, cutaway van chassis used for emergency vehicles, buses, and motorhomes, tow trucks and flat beds, platform and stake bodies, and refuse trucks. Class 7 through 9 include semi-trucks and extreme duty trucks used off-road in mining and logging operations.
Commercial truck tires have 2 basic tread designs - ribbed, characterized by parallel grooves around the circumference of the tire, and individual blocks or lugs, separated by grooves that run laterally and perpendicular to the sidewall. Ribbed tires generally have lower rolling resistance and are used in applications where optimal fuel efficiency is paramount. They are commonly used on the steering axle and the free-rolling axles on trailers, and also on drive axles when traction is not an issue. Block or lug tread tires are used on the drive axle to provide bite when increased traction is needed. Most modern commercial tires feature variations of these basic tread designs, along with specific rubber compounds and casing construction optimized for each application.
Commercial tire applications include tires designed for the long haul on highways, for use in regional/urban areas, and for on/off-road use. Tires for over-the-road tractor trailers have tread and rubber compound engineered for optimal fuel mileage and long tread life. Miles per gallon and tread life are also important for tires on trucks used for pickup and delivery in regional and urban areas, but they also must have the casing strength and durability to deal with curb scrubbing, potholes and the twisting that goes with making more frequent turns on city streets. Dump trucks and construction vehicles driven on and off the road need tires that resist abrasion, cuts, and punctures for reliable performance on both smooth and rough surfaces. There are also tires designed for multiple applications.
No matter whether you have a single truck, a few trucks, or a whole fleet of them, running the right tires can save you money. The reliable performance and traction you get from our commercial tires will enable your trucks to roll every day in all kinds of weather without getting stuck and needing roadside assistance. Their long wearing tread and tough, wear-resistant casings provide many miles of dependable service, extending replacement intervals. And their low rolling resistance, tread design and advanced rubber compound combine to deliver increased fuel economy. All of these factors add up to reduced operating costs. We offer all season, winter/snow and all terrain commercial tires in all popular sizes, so your trucks can go wherever the job takes them.
