A camshaft is one of the principal engine parts, whose main function is to receive torque from the crankshaft and use it for valve management. Connected to the crank via a timing belt or chain, the camshaft acts on the valves via pushrods or other parts with the help of its cams and thus provides perfectly timed valve operation. The number of camshafts differs according to the general engine design, but most modern engines employ the scheme with two camshafts located above the cylinder head(s). Both the gasoline and diesel 24-valve V6s installed in the Ram 1500 feature such an architecture, whereas the 16-valve 5.7L Hemi has different construction.
