Derived from the Porsche Boxster, the Porsche Cayman traces its roots back to 2005. Despite carrying different names, the Cayman and Boxster are in fact different variants of the same vehicle, so they share the platform and powertrain components. To highlight this, for 2017 model year Porsche added an identical numerical designation to both models. That’s how Porsche 718 Cayman was born. This coupe is defined as an entry-level Porsche, but don’t be misguided by this classification - the Cayman offers a fastback design and precisely-engineered drivetrain. The 718 Cayman is 172 inches long and features two cargo areas with a 9.7-cubic-feet overall capacity - more that you can expect from a sports car. The cockpit is appointed with the finest materials and is less compromised in terms of convenience than many other vehicles of this class.
Just a year after the release of the fourth-generation Cayman, Porsche debuts the next track-oriented GT4 model, now with even more power and enhanced traction. Despite Porsche devotees' concerns, the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 doesn’t go turbo and offers a naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder. A standard six-speed manual transmission carries over from the previous GT4, while the optional dual-clutch automatic has been added for 2018 model.
Apart from a high-performance GT4, the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman is offered in base and “S” configurations. The base Cayman sprints from zero to sixty mph in 4.5 seconds thanks to its 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged flat engine that cranks out 300 hp. The Cayman S is equipped with a 2.5-liter 350-horsepower flat-four turbo engine, which accelerates to 60 mph in just 4 seconds. Both models come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, while a seven-speed PDK automatic can be added optionally. Even more power can be expected from the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS – its 2.5-liter flat four churns out 365 hp, which is almost the same output as the base 911 Carrera can deliver. That makes the newcomer a perfect choice for those who like to test their sports car to the limit. Acceleration to 60 mph takes less than 4 seconds on the model equipped with a PDK, yet a 6-speed manual can also be had.
If you own the new GT4, the temptation to unleash its true potential on the track may become irresistible.
